I just caught a rerun of "Leverage" starring Jim Hutton's son, Timothy. It's "Leverage" episode "The 10 Li'l Grifters Job," season 4, ep. 2.
The episode features a masquerade mystery murder gala where each person dresses as a well-known detective.
Timothy's character, Nathan Ford, dresses up as Ellery Queen and tells his colleague, "the best detective who ever lived."
Great homage to a great tv detective by his real-life son.
Losers always whine about doing their best; winners go home and "eff" the prom queen

I recommend finding
Calamity Town
, the first (and IMHO the best) Wrightsville novel.
That one's a real tearjerker.

Personally, I love the Miss Marple A. Christie, but not so much the Hercule Poirot.
My Mom has the 60s paperback EQs with the risque covers. They are rather amusing considering how un-risque the stories are.

Yes, better to continue the conversation here. The thread on the CFB was really set up for avatar discussions.
I've heard that Ellery Queen was based on the Philo Vance character. Don't know if that's true or not.
Calamity Town is a wonderful book. It really captures the early 1940s small town feel, plus the wartime atmosphere. It's a tearjerker as well!
The Door Between is an amazing book, probably one of the best EQ books IMHO. It also has one of the best mystery endings ever. I've read some of the other ones you mentioned, but I don't remember them at all (or didn't enjoy them). "The Egyptian Cross" is one that I wish I never picked up.
One very charming book IMHO is "Inspector Queen's Own Case", in which Richard finds himself in a romantic situation.
That's a good book.
Also some of the short storiesthey are the ones with the dying clues. Some of them are extremely clever!
If only Jim had lived longer! Then maybe he and his son could have done an EQ series together, maybe in the nineties or something.
The only episode of Leverage which I've seen is the one you mentioned. The series didn't seem all that interesting, but I loved those vintage costumes.
Tim's was great because it was such a nice tribute to his dad. Also the woman who wore the Irene Adler costumenicely done! Then there were the two characters who dressed up as detective Encyclopedia Brown and his female sidekickI'd forgotten about those two until I saw the costumes in this episode!
I prefer the retro-40s and 50s show. Somehow, the computer-oriented theme of Leverage didn't do anything for me.
I will be watching Season Two of Nero Wolfe very soon.
Also some Korean crime films.
Nice to hear from you again!
We can keep chatting here, or else over PMs, if that doesn't bother you.

Good novels by Ellery Queen:
The Siamese Twins Mystery
The Spanish Cape Mystery
The Door Between
Calamity Town (tearjerkerfilled with plot holes, but still a great tragic story)
The Fourth Side of the Triangle (filmed as the pilot episode, and the book's ending is even more clever than the episode's) - this is the only novel that was filmed for this series
Richard Queen's Own Case (no Ellery in this book, and Richard finds himself a sweetheart!)
The short stories are the ones which have clever endings like the one in the pilot episode. I recommend looking up the short story collections (The Adventures of Ellery Queen, The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen, Calendar of Crime, etc.). The only short story which was filmed for this series is "The Mad Tea Party". It's in one of those books (forget which).
The novella "The Lamp of God" is very clever.
Actually, any classic mysteries you find are worth checking out. Anything by Agatha Christie, John Dickson Carr, etc.
Happy reading!

My suggestion is to start reading some of the books, if you can find them. Whether or not they were filmed, mysteries from before about 1950 are always worth reading. I think I replied to you in another post here than the EQ novels are worth a look, especially if you like the pilot episode (which I think you said you did). It's based on an EQ novel and the ending of the novel is even more clever than the ending of the episode. They dumbed it down a bit. I can give you some titles of good EQ books, if you're interested.
Timothy Hutton was in a two-season series called "Nero Wolfe", set in the forties and worth a look.
