I very much liked Richard Queen in this story. In a way, he reminds me of Ray Collins's Inspector Tragg in the old Perry Mason mysteries. He had that same way of sort of "lying in wait" during conversations, then springing a quip to show that he might be old, but he's no fool. Of course, Tragg was a lot more sneaky and even a little sadistic, but neither of them was the sort you should underestimate, despite appearances.
Flat, drab passion meanders across the screen!

Oh yes, I have seen Adam's Rib, along with a few others which he did in the early fifties: How to Marry a Millionaire, The Tender Trap, With a Song in my Heart. Terrific actor!

Those of you singing the praises of David Wayne REALLY need to check out "Adam's Rib", a Tracy/Hepburn flick where he plays their next-door neighborwith designs on Hepburn.

I started wearing glasses in Kindergarten. 1967? The year I graduated high school, my Dad was telling me about research being done and that someday I'd be able to have surgery to correct my eyesight. He worked for FDA and had read about it in some of their reports. I kept that in a corner of my brain (that was '80). When the finally started doing it, I didn't qualify because of my high degree of astigmatism. My husband was lucky enough to get his PRK paid for while in the military. I had LASIK a couple of years later, in '05. My dream of seeing what time it was without picking up the alarm clock and putting it three inches in front of my face was finally a reality. Now, I need reading glasses, but at the time my next pair of glasses were going to be bifocals anyway.

David Wayne's first film role was that of the musical neighbor of Tracy & Hepburn in "Adam's Rib," a fine movie with lots of good performances.

Regarding "Twelve Angry Men", yup, that's a good movie.
I am cutting down a bit on the Ellery Queen episodes, because if I do get bored of the episodes, then I won't want to watch them again for a long time. Of course, when I go for a few days without watching them, then I start to miss my dear Ellery lol. I do force myself to not watch the show for several days in a row (now and then). If only more episodes had been filmed! If only.
I'm also being careful about how many times I watch various Jim Hutton movies. I don't want to make the mistake of watching "The Honeymoon Machine" so many times that I end up getting bored of it (tee hee). I am forcing myself to watch other stuff as well. About a year ago, I overdid the movie "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House", and it was a long time before I could get back into it. I am practicing some self-restraint nowadays.
Ellery's fashion sense was wonderful. He looked so sexy in anything he wore! The hat looked great on him, the glasses were so cuteI'm sure that a lot of ladies looked twice at him when the show was on the air! I have come across a number of ladies on various boards who said that they had a crush on Jim Hutton back in the seventies (or sixties).
I think that Richard Queen really had his moments in "The Sinister Scenario" and "Caesar's Last Sleep". You're righthe did get caught up in the Hollywood hype in Sinister Scenario. And of course, he solves the case in Caesar's Last Sleep. I also like how he always kept Ellery "in line", so to speak, even though Ellery was in his thirties. In many of the episodes, he kept scolding Ellery about the burnt toast/eggs, about the not-so-fresh coffee, etc lol.
I agree with you about Christmas. It's hard to get into the spirit when the holiday season is so overhyped. Honestly, by the time that Dec 24th rolls around, I've had enough. I try to do as much of the major shopping as possible in late October/early November, and then I avoid the malls like the plague between about November 15 and January 10th or so. (The Boxing Day specials have turned into Boxing Month specialsextending from about Dec 26th to Jan 10th.) Thanksgiving is a much quieter holiday, though the Canadian Thanksgiving is in early October (not late November).

Yeah, it made me sad how supportive he was of her but he didn't really get anything backoh well, hopefully the real-life situation wasn't so unfair.
Another simple, but suspenseful movie is "Twelve Angry Men." That movie takes place all in a jury room (I haven't seen "Rope" but it may be similar because of being in one room all the time) but it's absolutely on-the-edge-of-your-seat type stuff.
I have a feeling I'm going to get burned out on "Ellery Queen" before too long, but I will enjoy it while I can. Yep, one of the things I like best about Ellery is his fashion sensedapper, stylish, classic, etc. I want my future husband to dress like him, haha! And I love Inspector Queen's little character momentsI love, in "Sinister Scenario" when he's all excited about seeing the Hollywood stars. He doesn't seem like the type of person that would get caught up in the glam, but it's a nice surprise. Also, I think it's funny when the LA police investigator isn't being very nice to Ellery and Richard, then his boss tells him to keep the Queens around for assistance. Then Richard asks if he can sit down, the LA guy sort of begrudgingly says yes, and Richard sits, puts his feet up on the desk, and quietly laughs. I love that! Very much an "in your face!" moment.
I have two nephews, 8 and 5 years old, and they are a blast! You'll have a great time with yours as he gets older. And I am NOT ready for Christmas! I haven't really gotten into the spirit much the past few years. We didn't even put up any decorations last year. It's way overhyped and hecticI prefer Thanksgiving these days. I love Christmas music but that's about itand shopping for my nephews, of course.

Regarding "With a Song in my Heart", I really don't know how accurately the relationships were portrayed. I don't know if they just got the lady's side of the story, or the man's as well. David Wayne's character really was used, but maybe it was that way in real life. At any rate, he did an amazing job of portraying that first hubby.
I agree with you about "Duel". Sometimes the most simple suspense movies are the most suspenseful. For example, I think that "Duel" and Hitchcock's "Rope" are far more suspenseful than, say, "North by Northwest". "Rope" is set entirely in one room, while "North by Northwest" is a cat and mouse chase all over the Statesha ha. "Duel" was probably a very low-budget film, since there weren't very many actors involved and since they could have filmed it on a closed course.
I try to get to the Ellery Queen episodes wherever possible, but I am forcing myself to watch other stuff, too. I don't want to overdo the Ellery Queen episodes, because there are only about 20 of them and I don't want to get bored of them! Still, I do enjoy tuning in from time to time to see my Cutie. I love his hat, his glasses, his wonderful outfits, his smile, his inability to make anything in the kitchen (coffee, toast), and his open shirt moments. His eyes are so georgeousthey look blue sometimes and they look grey sometimes! I have become more and more interested in Richard Queen as wellI love his "tummy fizz" and his "I was NOT sleeping!" moments! Tee hee.
My Halloween this year was quiet. I didn't feel like doing much this year. I even went to bed early. Last year's Halloween was busier for meI helped my parents to pass out Halloween candy. Two years ago, I was out of town for Halloween. Next year will be better, because my Baby Nephew will be 15 months old and therefore old enough to wear a cute costume. My sister didn't bother with a costume for him this year, since he's only 3 months old.
Hope the haunted house was fun!
Now we'll be hearing about Christmas nonstop for the next two months lol. Christmas is a fun time of the year, but the hype in the malls tends to get annoying.

Yeah, it made me feel a little better to know that Susan Hayward and Rory Calhoun didn't last much longer either.
"Duel" is a great movie!! I love how simple and yet, how intense it is. Shows how talented Steven Spielberg was even from the beginning of his career. I've seen it 2 or 3 times but it's been a while. It definitely is a movie I always stop and watch if I catch it on TV though.
I'm still watching "Ellery Queen" at night, mainly because that's the only time when I can. I'm still watching a bunch of David Wayne's stuff too. I'm going to try and find a few of his movies on iOffer that are hard to find elsewhere. There's one called "Wait Til the Sun Shines, Nellie" that looks pretty good. I also want to get "The Last Angry Man," which was Paul Muni's last film. I've seen it before (and liked it a lot) but it's been years and years.

Hey, I'm glad you got to see "With a Song in my Heart"! I wonder just how accurately they portrayed the first marriage? Did the marriage really flop for the reasons mentioned? Or were there other reasons? The second marriage flopped after the movie was released, by the way.
I think you're right about William Powell's character in "How to Marry a Millionaire".
Recently, I watched the 1971 movie "Duel". Very good and very scary movie! Have you seen it? I really recommend it. Tonight, I'm definitely treating myself to eye candy (aka "Don't be Afraid of the Dark"). I'll be on the lookout for the open shirt moment.
I'm still keeping up with the Ellery Queen episodes (on and off). The episodes are great, and I love the various Ellery moments. You brought a few of them to my attention (The Chinese Dog, The Black Falcon), and of course, I still have a few fave moments from episodes like "The Judas Tree". Here and there, I rewatch some of the movies starring Jim Hutton (The Honeymoon Machine, Walk Don't Run, etc.). I'm planning on watching more film noir this week, though.

I watched "With a Song in My Heart" this weekend. It kind of made me sad how Susan Hayward's character never really loved her husband, although I'm not sure he "loved" her in the usual way either. Seemed like they sort of used each other. Nevertheless, I didn't like the way she treated my dear David Wayne.
I feel the same way about William Powell in "How to Marry a Millionaire." He is such a nice guy (and quite handsome) but you know he never had a chance with Lauren Bacall's character. The scene on the plane, though, is my favoriteso cute!

I adore "How to Marry a Millionaire". I love the scene on the plane, and I also love William Powell's performance. He doesn't have a big part in the movie, but the scenes towards the endvery heartbreaking. I did feel sorry for his character. At the same time, he should have expected something like that to happen to him.
Enjoy "With a Song in my Heart". It's a sweet movie. You might want to do a bit of research on the main character's marriages before seeing the movie, or at least, right after you see the movie.

Well, I'm off to watch "Looking for Love". Jim Hutton looked great in that movie, but I do prefer the way he looked in the seventies. I'll be watching "The Honeymoon Machine" later. He was a cutie in that one as well. On Halloween, I'm probably going to rewatch "Don't be Afraid of the Dark".

If you can find it, I recommend "Tom, Dick, and Harry" with Ginger Rogers. Burgess is super cute in that movie! "Of Mice and Men" is also good, but it's pretty depressing. To me, he's the best part of the "Grumpy Old Men" moviesall those dirty jokes he makes are hilarious!
My vision isn't too badI mostly need glasses for driving at night and watching TV and stuff like that. I'm nearsighted and I mostly work on a computer at my job so I don't really need them while I'm at work. Putting the contacts in and taking them out never bothered me but I could never wear them for real long periods of time because my eyes would start to get irritated.

I never could wear contacts, because I'm so scared of anything coming towards my eyes. It's been glasses for me since I was about ten years old. I've never been self-conscious about glasses. Of course, I never had any choice in the matter because I'm blind without them. My sister had the laser eye surgery done and that corrected her vision.
I'll try to track down both versions of "M" and maybe see some flicks starring Burgess Meredith. I've seen him in the "Grumpy Old Men" movies, but that's about it

I LOVE David Wayne!! I think he's such a great actor. I do think it's interesting that he was paired with Marilyn more than any other actor. You wouldn't think they would make a good match but they actually had quite good chemistry and, if you look at her marriages as evidence, she may have gone for the intellectual, quiet type anyway. I thought "We're Not Married" was cute toothe reference to them having a child without being married was kind of risque for the time but they had the nice little excuse that they "thought" they were married when they had the child, so they could get away with it.
"With a Song in My Heart" is next on my Netflix queue! Very much looking forward to watching it. He was a very versatile actorI've also seen him in the remake of "M" where he plays a very disturbed child murderer and in several TV roles where he doesn't always play the nice guy. He didn't get lead roles very often but he was able to do so much with his supporting parts. I tend to be more interested in that kind of actor anywayI'm also a big fan of Burgess Meredith, who reminds me of David Wayne in many ways. They were both the kind of actor that can do pretty much anything and don't often have lead roles but always make a big impression anyway. They were also very active in the theater, where they did get more chances to play the lead.
I wear glasses toogot them in 3rd grade and was very self-conscious about them for a long time. Switched to contacts in high school, but now I just wear glasses again. I would say they are more "cool" now and also I'm not so concerned about what people think. Also, the glasses I have are really cute.

I got my first pair of glasses when I was a kid in the eighties. By that time, the glasses were stylish, so I didn't have to be sensitive about wearing them. Besides, it seemed like all the kids were getting glasses. In other words, no big deal that I was wearing them, too.
I admit that I kinda like those thick black ones which people wore before about 1970 or so. Of course, I never had to wear them, so I should probably keep my mouth shut. I think that Ellery's thick black glasses are quite nice and that he looks really sexy when he wears them in the episodes.

I think another movie he was in with Marilyn was a movie called "We're Not Married" - 5 couples find out the JP who married them jumped the gun and married them before his license was valid.
Wayne is Married to Monroe, and they have a small baby - I can't remember all the ins and outs, but when they find out they aren't legally married, she is able to compete in a beauty conntest for single women only - so she is able to enter and win quite a lot of money - which they desperately needed. I remember thinking it was funny because somehow they were able to allude to a "illigitimate" kid (quite the thing back then) and it got past the censors! Kind of unusual back then.
I love that scene on the plane- I wear glasses too and back when I saw the movie for the first time, TV-1970's) I was still sensitive about it!

Actually, he and Marilyn co-starred in several movies. "How to Marry a Millionaire" is my favorite of all of those.
David Wayne was also excellent in a musical called "With a Song in my Heart". It's based on the life of a famous singer from the 30s and 40s. He plays her first husband. Definitely worth a look!
By the way, what's interesting is that the scene in "How to Marry a Millionaire" (on the plane) centered around Marilyn's glasses and how she didn't want to wear them. About ten years later, Jim Hutton and Paula Prentiss co-starred in a movie called "The Honeymoon Machine", in which the discussion between the two of them centered around her glasses and how she didn't want to wear them. (tee hee) So both Jim Hutton and David Wayne have had a chance to play a character who tells his sweetheart to put her glasses on.

Love the Richard Queen Character - Wayne really was super. I remember how surprised I was when he showed up in How to Marry a Millionare and ended up marrying Marilyn Monroe - and even more surprised when I learned one of his earlier roles was on Broadway, playing a leprecaun in Finnian's Rainbow!
