Apparently, this show was created when Cleese and Booth visited a bed and breakfast and found a rude inn keeper.
I'm kind of wondering if the real-life guy wasn't as bad but maybe Cleese and Booth being rich stars just rubbed him the wrong way.
Or alternatively maybe they were just having an off day

The Sinclairs' story is interesting. Some other people who worked there came forward with their own stories of Basil-esque things that happened to them. Others outside of the immediate family said that while Sinclair liked discipline, the Basil Fawlty characterization turned him into a caricature.
