I think the ratings were so through the roof in the 70's it didn't matter who the guest host was. Though, it did seem like every other week it was either Steve Martin, Candice Bergen, or Buck Henry.
Note that after the original cast left in May 1980 the show's ratings plummeted and NEVER fully recovered to their 70's almighty height.
Shall we play a game?

Aykroyd was, indeed, a big fan of Crawford's work on "Highway Patrol" and their parody of the show was great, as was the short film of Crawford walking around New York getting recognized by street kids. That's the interesting thing about the show back then was they'd invite unlikely people to host. Strother Martin, Julian Bond, who knew what Buck Henry even looked like before he hosted? And they had him back multiple times.

Forgive me on that note. However he was such a misfire host.and at the height of the show's 1970s popularity.

Seriously; way way back in the 1970s
Broderick Crawford. Who? you ask?
He was a gruff husky star of an old 1950s show called "Highway Patrol". Now- this was not like the number one show on TV at the time even! Also, as an actor Broderick Crawford was like a " C- lister" and had very few impressive credits.
SO who the hell got the idea that a stale actor from some 1950s throw-away police show should host SNL when they were riding high in the ratings ??????
I have a VERY strong feeling that Belushi & Ackroyd were on a cocaine bender and got the idea. They both loved spoofing stale 1950s police shows like Dragnet and such.
Horrible choice of a host!

Low points were Russell Crowe, Drake.
High points: Tina Fey, Larry David, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Paul Rudd, Bruno Mars, Martin Short.

Easily the best guests seem to act more like cast members than hosts. Hanks, Baldwin, Timberlake all could be cast members. Not a fan, but Brittany Spears is someone that knows how to nail it on the show. I remember actor Martin Freeman had no trouble fitting in on one of the Christmas shows. One surprise was Sen. John McCain who I thought would crash and burn, but wouldn't you know it, he managed to hold it together.

John Malkovich and Jim Carrey were great hosts but really there have been so many great hosts like Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, and Christopher Walken it's impossible for me to say who's the best.
The worst hosts are easier to pick out. Milton Berle, Robert Blake, and Louise Lasser immediately come to mind.

Best would probably be Steve Martin IMO. I know of three who would probably be the absolute worst. In no particular order, Louisse Lasser, Milton Berle and Rob Reiner. IMO.
