mind you I'm NOT one of those "if you don't like it you don't get it" people because I used to hate this movie
but since have grown to love it; it's one of my favorite Kubrick films
and I too didn't like the choice of Ryan O'Neal at first
but the fact this ENTIRE movie is about a selfish jerk turned tyrant is perfect for O'Neal, who in real life was a bit of a tyrant too, and it comes out here: the womanizing jerk who mistreats children and lives only for himself
when you go back, even the beginning of the movie, where Barry is sympathetic… even during those scenes he is a selfish little jerkoff who ONLY thinks of himself. an upstart and con artist.
O'Neal therefore is perfect, and a Robert Redford would NOT have fit.

The genius of Barry Lyndon isn't the performance but the way the story unfolding on screen runs contrary to the narration.

Agreed. Barry Lyndon is an asshole, but any good actor could portray that. Redford might have been great in the part, but we'll never know.
