I always assumed that after Barry settled down with Lady Lyndon, the Chevalier simply continued his life as a wandering nomad gambler.

Exactly !! Always wondered . He was such an influential character and it seemed strange after Barry's new found success he would leave . Maybe the novel has the answers .
