I'm glad that you warned me off the Blu-ray. I've just got the 2001 Warner DVD release second-hand. The quality is decent. A slight wash to the colors but that makes it nice to watch actually.

I'm waiting for Criterion to fix that now that Warner Bros. finally realized what companies like Criterion and Shout Factory can do with their library titles.

Kubrick films are probably the only ones that were so SHARP because of perfect lighting, camera angles, depth etc that the DVDS rival the BluRays. It's crazy.

Has anyone else compared the Blu-ray Vs DVD side by side? It's a shame that the DVD has a superior picture.

I noticed viewing the DVD and the Bluray side be side, the DVD's coloring is by far superior over the Bluray. This is easily the most beautifully filmed movie that I have ever seen, I couldn't even imagine how the Bluray could possibly improve upon it, how do you top perfection? I guess they couldn't, somebody tweaked with it that didn't know what they were doing or something, but check it out, the DVD has a way prettier picture.
Anybody else agree?

What horror stories did you hear?
Isn't digital technology already turning out to be a horror story? Bluray, DVD, and CD are already on the verge of disappearing (replaced by internet downloading), being sucked into the infinite vortex that is cyberspace. Soon, everything will be in cyberspace, will be virtualized, including everyone's identities, with no 'outside', and when that happens

There are purists who complain about the alteration of the aspect ration on the Blu-ray, but the fact of the matter is that it's unnoticeable to casual viewers.

in hi-def is a no-brainer over the alternative. It's arguably the most miraculous-looking film ever made and you NEED 1080p to even approach doing it justice.

I own the bluray and it looks magnificent. First time watching Barry Lyndon was on Netflix. The second time was on bluray and it blew me away. Couldn't believe it was made in the 1970's. But that's what amazing cinematography does. The photography and lighting are spectacular.
