That's a good interpretation.

the movie and the book give different messages.
the movie has chief killing mcmurphy for being a vegetable with no quality of life after the lobotomy. the book has chief killing him so he doesn't serve an an example of what happens if you challenge the powers that be. Which I think the overlying message is that there is a very thin line between the sickness of the mentally ill and the sickness of those who abuse power.
Billy Bibbit was the one that really broke my heart though. the kills himself because nurse ratched says she is going to tell billy' mother that he lost his virginity.
