is the correct one: The filmmaker's (assuming they reveal it in an interview or something) or the viewer's (they usually interpret while watching the movie, before watching/reading the filmmaker's interview)? Is it different when the movie in question has one ambiguous element and when the entire plot is ambiguous? Whatever the answers are, do they also apply to other works of art?

If a filmmaker left elements ambiguous, I'm sure it was with reason. Sometimes, the intent is to get you to think about the possible solution. Other times, it's because the filmmaker doesn't want you to get bogged down with specifics regarding plot and character, but rather experience the scene from a more emotional or "instinctual" viewpoint.
