As soon as I read the thread subject I was going to recommend Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. Then I saw your reply. This movie deserves much more attention.

Try Valerie and her Week of Wonders. Not based on a classic fairy tale but has the same coming of age themes and fantastical/nightmarish feel.
