i just watched this film a few days ago for the first time and i just watched the hunting party a few weeks ago for the first time. both are classic films. wtf? why did they get low rated?
what? were they too gritty for the pansy assed critics?

• Forget MY DARLING CLEMENTINE or TOMBSTONE, this is the best take on Doc Holliday I've ever seen.
  All of these are odd, outstanding, and morally ambiguous revisionist westerns!

El Topo! I'm not sure if you'd call that a true western, but it does have a western-type theme. Vaquero-type Mexicans riding horses with six-shooters killin' people.

there you go. i just watched the appallosa and i was blown away by marlon brando. every single thing he does is perfect and in character in this film. he gets every single body movement, facial expression, way of talking, voice emotion, voice inflection perfect. i've never watched or seen anything like it in acting and i've been watching movies my whole life for over 30 years and 2000 movies.
its like he's possessed in this film. i couldn't take my eyes off him for one second. he inhabits his character. also, he never overacts, it's the most subtle acting. he's completely convincing, he is the character.

recently saw "The Appaloosa". slow-moving for the most part, but very enjoyable. definitely under the radar and definitely worth checking out

Another pair of Brando westerns worth checking out are "One Eyed Jacks" and "The Appaloosa", both under-rated at the times of their releases.

How about another pair of Nicholson westerns: The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind? The Shooting, especially, is very off-beat.

it's fairly mainstream, the long riders, but it's offbeat as it seems like a bunch of progressive hippies who went back in time to be cowboys.

LONG RIDERS ain't offbeat. Mebbe the best take of the Jesse James legend, though.
Another offbeat Western not really liked is BILLY TWO HATS.

I love Longriders with the Quaids, the Carradines, and..someone else. Very raw = very entertaining.
