I thought a lot of this show as a kid.
It hasn't held up as well as some of the shows, but
there are certainly some fun elements and concepts.

I absolutely loved this show as a kid in the 70's. When it was repeated in the early/mid 90's on the Bravo channel (UK version) I taped all the episodes, and I've just been watching them again recently. Sure it looks pretty dated now, and the effects weren't great but it was really compelling and I liked all the characters. It's certainly been influential too, like many on here have said. Sliders, Stargate and Lost definitely took themes and ideas from this show, it's clear. It's a shame it's not out on dvd anymore. Loved Roddy McDowall in it and I had a bit of a childhood crush on Ike Eisenmann, lol!
"Ack! Ack!! ACK! Aaaaaaack!"

It was the progenitor of shows that would later become as an example LOST which is a hit show now. It was the first of it's type of "soujourn" shows in which the characters wind up on some mysterious journey. It was most like the original STAR TREK in alot of ways, and I think D.C. Fontana had a hand in that.
For it's time it was a cool concept and timely(the whole Bermuda Triangle bit).

The thing to remember is the 'magic numger' for Strip/daily syndication back then was 65 - this was so a show could be shown 5 days a week for 13 weeks without repeasting an episode; Cartoons generally were done as weekly syndication and required a lot fewer episodes. However there were many shows that did not fit this so you got "package deals" where several shows were bought and cycled through.
This is how shows like Time Tunnel (30 episodes) and Logan's Run TV series (14 episodes) would on occation show up in syndication but such package deals were rare as they resulted in a really disjointed timeslot.

Does it ever play in syndication?
Probably not. A tv show has to have reached 100 episodes before it can go into syndication at least that's what the current rules for broadcasting are. If a network like Sci Fi wants to show it, they
can
work up a broadcast deal, but for general syndication, it didn't have enough episodes.

A complete series 5 disc DVD set of the series was produced; I don't think it's available in stores any longer, but I recently got a copy off eBay.
I had fond memories of the show as a 10-yr old as well, and was anxious to get it. Too bad it didn't last longer.

You are thinking about episode three, 'Beyond the Mountain'.Roddy Mc Dowall played the doctor who made the robots, but he turned good in the end and joined up with the time travellers.

The only thing I remembered from when this show aired during the 70's was when Varian healed the old guys arm with that tunning fork thingy and his friends thought it was killing him when he groaned so the black dude socked Varian. Everything else about this series was a blur until some of the episodes came on SciFi channel back in its enfancy. It had alot of promise, but they dropped some characters I rather liked and it seemed some of the stories lacked direction.

I've seen it shown on the SF Channel at least once. They used to show old short-lived SF shows from the past. (They showed Automan and Phoenix as well.)
I still love this show. The special effects are low budget, but I loved the whole premise. And Roddy McDowell never hurts.

Evenin' all,
I remember being crazy for this show. It had a rather low budget which was prettymuch the standard for sci-fi programs of the time. I once read that NBC was going to bring back the Star Trek series (WITHOUT Leonard Nomoy?!?!?) under similar conditions. But then along came a little movie called Star Wars. This I think (in part) may have prompted the swift cancellation of Fantastic Journey in favor of the bigger budget and (IMHO) more cheezy "Buck Rodgers and the 25th Century." The good news was that it propelled Star Trek to the big screen WITH Leonard Nimoy in it.

I just re-watched "Atlantium". The Source- the brain in a globe- and those pop-up red lights on the mountain that zapped runaways, were the creepiest things I saw on TV when I was 6. Unfortunately, I did not get the last word on TV tuning and had to watch "Little House on the Prairie" instead for most of this series.
Fantastic Journey should be watched when you are tired of Star Trek (original series) or Lost in Space reruns, where you can see the same plots with different actors!
