I had recently finished watching all 10 available episodes of Fantastic Journey, and I was a little surprised that an episode I had always thought that was a part of this series, did not appear.
Now given that this was 30 years ago, perhaps I'm remembering something else, like Logans Run, or Buck Rogers, Planet Of The Apes, it's hard to say. I don't recall seeing Otherworld at all, so I don't think that this memory is linked to that show.
The episode I had always remembered as being THE LAST episode of FJ had to do with the four travelers getting involved with a society headed by a alien military leader. The foursome of course upset everything in this society, and help cause a revolt, and the alien military leader is banned from the city. In the end he asks to join the four in their journey through the zones, as he has nowhere to go.
All I can remember about the alien military leader is that he wore a futurisic uniform, and his head was sort of "feathered", although he looked more human than bird-like. I'm well aware of the Buck Rogers tv series having a Hawk Man, but that's not the character I'm remembering.
Maybe this was an episode that was aired later after cancellation. Networks sometimes tried to recoup as much lost coin as they could by filling what would normally be re-run space with anything that they've already laid out the big bucks for.
Can anyone help me identify what tv show this was?

I saw a writeup of that unfilmed 11th episode too. Obviously that was not the episode I'm talking about. As I said, I'm open to suggestions, or an explanation.

The 11th episode was never filmed, according to the following site
http://www.snowcrest.net/fox/journey/index.html
Perhaps it was one of the 10 originally aired? Or an episode of another series altogether? Anyway what you're describing doesn't sound anything like the plot of the unfilmed 11th episode. I remember this series as well, but I'm not sure if I saw all 10 episodes as they were aired. There were probably a few I missed.

I remembered the Roddy McDowall episode from way back then, but what episode I'm talking about was THE LAST episode aired, and the "mililitary leader" was alien in appearance. It still puzzles me.
I know the difference between Roddy McDowall and the "feathered alien dictator of a city". McDowall's episode basicly had him as a somewhat menacing father figure type to a society of androids that he hijacked from a race of green-skinned exiles.
The episode I vaguely remember had the travelers stumbling on a city that was ruled by the dictator, and they set in motion the events that exiled him in the end.
I do admit this plot sounds like a couple of the FJ plots of at least 3 of their episodes, but I KNOW I did see this. I just don't know if it was a FJ episode for sure. I was watching shows like Land Of The Lost too at the time, so I agree that it's entirely possible that I could be ramming together two different memories of two different shows.
Again, I'm hoping someone could help us in straightening out this misplaced memory.

It sounds a lot like the scene in which Roddy McDowall joins them. Maybe you saw it on a rerun and believed it was the next episode.
When I re-watched the series on DVD, I discovered I had false memories of the episode order and scene order. But, I was never clear who the permanent cast members were. My favorite character as a kid was the guy who got zapped by the Source on the hill. Or maybe the Source was my favorite character maybe it was the fun of tumbling down those California hills and evading popup death rays. (There are some parts of this show you can take seriously - this isn't one of them.)
Until I got the DVD, I didn't even realize that Funhouse belonged to this series. I figured An Act of Love as something from Land of the Lost. (Saw these on Saturday mornings with a lot of other shows.) Still looking for the episode where they are trapped in a room that is filling with sand. Maybe that was on Isis.
Anyway, if you are right and there is a lost episode, I would be very happy too.

I was never aware that the girl was even gone from the show's cast, until I recently watched the dvds of the series. To tell the truth, all I remember of the characters were McDowall and Eisenmann(both actors were on many programs in that time, and very recognisable), and I couldn't remember exactly how many travelers were in the group. I always wanted to watch the show when it originally aired, but ended up missing a few because of my lack of viewing discipline.
I just scanned the old 1977 issues of the tv sections that appeared in the sunday editions of The Des Moines Register. I went from March to September, but saw no mention of any errant airing of a lost episode of Fantastic Journey.
Now this does not mean it never aired, as I remember many times over the years watching a program that was not listed on the tv schedules, whether it be a TV Guide magazine, or a newspaper listing. Usually unknown or unscheduled broadcasts were listed as "To Be Ann." At other times the schedule was changed at the last minute, and too late for the presses.
It's entirely possible that this unidentified FJ episode could of aired later in 1977, but that will take some more newspaper searching. I did notice that Logan's Run BEGAN it's short string of airings in the fall of 1977, but I've checked show synopsises of that series, and they don't sound close to what I remember. Besides, I don't remember watching any Logan's Run episodes, although I knew of them.
All I an say truthfully is that I associated this memory of a show with FJ, and it aired on Channel 13/WHO TV sometime in mid-1977. Now we'll both need help with comments on what we're both remembering. The military dictator was exiled from his people at the end of the episode, and ended up asking the foursome for forgiveness in his actions against them, and asked to travel with them through the zones. It was after that episode(whatever it was) that I remember hearing that it was abruptly cancelled.

Another reason why this sounds familiar to me is that the Atlantean girl had to quit the show and I very vaguely remember thinking, "oh and they're replacing her now with THIS guy?"
I need to dig up the episodes myself, I actually never caught the first two when I was a kid!

Yeah, it's entirely possible. I'm going to go to my city's microfilmed newspaper back-issues and look up the tv sections to see if any episodes were aired AFTER the official last episode. Wouldn't it be typical of the releasing studio to have hushed up an 11th (and possibly others) episode simply because they couldn't fit 11 neatly into 5 discs?
I'm glad somebody remembers this too. There weren't too many Sci-Fi shows in the 1970's, and back then my parents were the controllers of what was watched, and they just weren't sci-fi fans at all(god rest their souls). I do know that I never saw ALL the episodes, but I always thought the episode I've mentioned was the actual last episode of this series.
Thanks for at least being someone else who remembers this as a possible missing episode. I'll keep you posted.

Actually that sounds familiar to me!
Perhaps it was an 11th episode that wasn't aired in the US? I grew up near the border with Canada and we got to see a lot of tv shows that were pre-empted by the US networks for sports. For instance, I got to see 2 episodes of Mann & Machine that weren't shown on NBC and didn't air in the US until SciFi got it.
