It seems like they scraped half the cast after the first episode. I wonder why?

I have a copy of an old film called Lost in Time but I think it must be different because it was a horror film and not a 2 episode programme you where talking about.

I hate the way they threw away half of the original cast. I remember watching the Pilot but not the series.

It was originally a 90 minute TV film, that segwayed into the series the following week with just an hour long episode. When the original pilot was repeated it was hacked down to an hour. Also, in the original pilot, the date is clearly "June 1976", and later when this show was edited this date was removed and, in the credits sequence for the show, it was stated that Fred and Scott were from 1977 which is when the show started in Feb '77.
To further confuse followers, the opening 90 minute movie, and 1 hour conclusion was edited into a 1 hour 40 minute TV film called LOST IN TIME. Same opening credits, save for the title card read "Lost in Time" as oppsed to "The Fantastic Journey". This found it's way to Sunday/Saturday afternoon and late night syndicated cable movies into the late 80's and early 90's. It was also narrated in spots to let us know what was going on and to bridge together very obvious edits and gaps in continuity. The show ended with the cast leaving Atlantium and vanishing into the show's usual ending of the time zone effect and the narration went like "And so they searched for their rightful place in time, maybe someday they will find it".

I found my answer,
Pilot 1-A
Written by Merwin Gerard
This was shown (evidently) the season before as a TV movie. Included footage of WWII airplanes which had crashed in the jungle and a longer cave sequence. Most of the cast would not survive the pilot. A throw away line in Atlantium had some of the characters 'sent home' however due to the nature of the people in Atlantium they were most likely absorbed by that giant brain.
