I don't agree with the OP's opinion on Susan Harris because she was a very talented writer.
This was a good show but I wouldn't put it as one of the all-time greats. Today it is more remembered for being the show that Benson was a spin off of than anything else.

You may have disliked the show, to each his their own, but surely you don't expect us to think this show wasn't controversial at the time. I wasn't old enough to watch but I remember hearing my mother & her friends talking about it and it's shocking content. Definitely in retrospect it's not cutting edge we've seen gay characters & gigilos and such but late 70s early 80s these were not everyday sitcom fare
