This movie is very interesting when it uses the power of suggestion and the less is more approach, Roys first encounter in his truck is pretty riveting. The mysterious nature of the movie is when its at its best but every time it gets to that part where the aliens finally show themselves Im always disappointed, you can tell the craft that went into this telling this story and all that build up and then they look frankly pretty ridiculous, like dime store costumes it really takes away from the movie IME. I would of rather had them not shown at all or at the very least keep them in the shadows only give us a slight glimpse at a distance. Im honestly surprised thats all they came up with and Spielberg okay'd it, he made Jaws several years earlier with a great looking shark so I just can't imagine him thinking the alien design looked good. I'm always with the movie until then and Im just taken out of it, the little kids running around with alien heads on and it doesn't seem like they were directed to act in any way other than "hey run around" their movements should of been less human.

It did not look good to me so have to agree to disagree on that but the technology thing is not a good excuse because like I mentioned Jaws came out before it and the shark looks great. A very skinny guy in a suit would of looked better than that puppet at the end but again he didn't need to show it at all just show the ship door opening and an keep them hidden and shadowy. I just ruins it for me I dk I just can't help it, the part in the beginning was pretty stupid looking too in terms of design where they ships are being chased down the street, it just looks really bad They could of used miniatures and shown a ship with some lights on it but instead its just this extremely fake looking light racing around the street. I dont know this movie has an interesting premise but I just can't get into because of those flaws.

The way the aliens looked was definitely very important to Spielberg, and he was never satisfied with how they look in the movie. The problem was the technology was not there to get the look exactly how he wanted. That's why they are always shown in silhouette, they were actually little girls from a ballet school in suits. The exception is the alien that does the hand signals at the end. It was an animatronic puppet that I thought looked damn good for 1977 special effects technology.
