I SUPPOSE MY THREAD TITLE SAYS IT ALL. BUT IT WAS GOOD TO SEE LIONEL STANDING IN AN UNTYPICAL ROLE. I WANTED TO SHOUT 'CUT' ON TOO MANY OCCASIONS. AND MINNELLI IRRITIATED BEYOND BELIEF. NO WONDER JIMMY DUMPED HER. AND LIZA LOOKED VERY OVERRIPE WITH WAY TOO MUCH MAKE UP. A BIT LIKE A DRAG QUEEN - WHICH MAY EXPLAIN HER POPULARITY IN SOME QUARTERS. THE WHOLE FILM WAS A RE-HASH OF 'A STAR IS BORN', WITHOUT THE CHARM, FEELING OR NUANCE OF CHARACTER. AND THERE REALLY ARE ONLY 2 SONGS OF NOTE IN THE WHOLE FILM WHICH WENT ON INTERMINABLY.
SORRY, BUT I THINK THAT THIS MAMMOTH OF A FILM PROVED THAT LIZA WAS BRILLIANTLY DIRECTED IN CABARET AND THAT SHE WAS A ONE NOTE PERFORMER. AND LIKE MAMMOTHS SHE IS NOW PRETTY MUCH EXTINCT.

Jimmy was irritating and unlikeable. Francine was just irritating. She looked a chimp mimicking Jimmy's repetitive jumpy and abrupt half-wit sentences.

WELL, THIS IS NOT ONE OF MY FAVES PICTURES, BUT I DISAGREE WITH YOU. THIS MOVIE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BORING (if you refer to 1937's version, I've never seen the one with Judy Garland)"A STAR IS BORN"
