Did the film makers not see 'The French Connection'? The lead character's name is Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle. Why would they use the same name for the lead character of this film? TFC won best picture, which means it was seen by many. So it certainly doesn't help this films' cause by using that name.

You answered your own question. People know the guy in TFC as Popeye Doyle. The guy in NYNY is Jimmy Doyle.
