Is the whale supposed to have died?
I got the implication that it couldn't burst up through the ice to come up for air at the end but I'm not sure.

From what I could see, the whale had a mortal wound, so it would die from that. But also, the whale still intensely grieved for its dead family, so that would also be a cause for it dying. In reality, animals that are dear death do go off to an isolated place to die. The whale was doing the same thing. Since it knew it was dying, it did not matter to him that he was going under thicker ice.
I try doing this with my posts

It's really debatable. Nolan did mention and set up that the whale had to come up for air and the ice would block him, but then, he also set up Bo Derek shooting the whale. So I dunno
