i love the whole movie but to me the setup IN purgatory (per se) is more entertaining and brilliantly set-up than the drive THROUGH it.
and I think the French guy was the best character by far. his back story was like a short story in itself while the others were quick sequences. and he's the most sympathetic and human AND cool throughout.
Friedkin not only wanted McQueen to star but Lino Ventura to be the French guy but… I don't know… he'd work in the jungle scenes but not much else… I'm glad a nobody stepped in and for me stole the movie……..
