<p dir="auto">i love the whole movie but to me the setup IN purgatory (per se) is more entertaining and brilliantly set-up than the drive THROUGH it.<br />
and I think the French guy was the best character by far. his back story was like a short story in itself while the others were quick sequences. and he's the most sympathetic and human AND cool throughout.<br />
Friedkin not only wanted McQueen to star but Lino Ventura to be the French guy but… I don't know… he'd work in the jungle scenes but not much else… I'm glad a nobody stepped in and for me stole the movie……..<br />
