There's a word for it: continuity.
Although you are right that one of the girls (Carol Robertson) had a private funeral, the director/producer probably felt that this shouldn't have been addressed, as it was not pivotal in depicting the tragic event. They simply took advantage of their creative license to revise the funeral setting for dramatic purposes.
