A huge discrepancy only three of the girls shared a funeral. The fourth family had already made arrangements for a private funeral before the movement decided that it needed the joint funeral. Why do movies do this?

There's a word for it: continuity.
Although you are right that one of the girls (Carol Robertson) had a private funeral, the director/producer probably felt that this shouldn't have been addressed, as it was not pivotal in depicting the tragic event. They simply took advantage of their creative license to revise the funeral setting for dramatic purposes.
