The fact that he secretly called someone meant that
A) he was in on the conspiracy and calling the bad guys.
B) he didn't buy her story and was calling some kind of (medical ?) back-up.
Since the ending rules out A, who do you think he was calling and what for ? A 24-hour shrink ?
I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.
