Sure it's a little on the nose, but I don't think there's ever been better use of a "pop" song (i.e. non score) in a movie. Certainly not a horror movie. Combined with the dying sunlight dappling through the trees it just sets the mood so perfectly for what's about to come.
It also transports you right into the late 70s, which is a crucial component of the movie IMO. Not only the zeitgeist of the era, but teens with no internet or cell phones. There's a certain vulnerability there.

The sound quality of that song wasn't that good. I could barely hear the cowbell.

One of the best uses of a song in film. I love it.

Agreed, the opening scene with "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" playing over the opening credits was the best part of that disappointing miniseries.

It was perfect for this film. Incidentally, I thought it was used very well in The Stand - the tv movie of Stephen King's great book.

Dont Fear the Reaper will forever be inextricably linked to Halloween for me. Ive been re-watching Scream lately and have to say, after the opening sequence, the nods to Halloween are my favorite things about it.
