Alot of people have asked, is he really a vampire? On the Lions Gate dvd, on the "A Recounting" (great punnot) special feature, George A. Romero himself says with a big smirk on his face, "People have asked me about MartinNo, I don't think he's a vampire, I just think he's mixed up" (Maybe not word for word). Either way, I think the film was filmed ambigiously as to Martin's true nature, but I'm just saying, that's what GAR says. My stance: it's intentionally ambigious and GAR just wanted to give his view on it.

Thanks for posting this; I was just in the process of trying to paraphrase these comments for the board after watching a recording of this series last night.

Coming into this a bit late, but still
The following is from an interview with George Romero that was broadcast recently on Part 3 of
A History of Horror with Mark Gatiss
(BBC TV):
Gatiss:
Is he a fantasist who thinks hes a vampire, or?
Romero:
Oh gosh, I think completely, yes completely. I mean, you have to make a decision when youre doing a film like that, where you want it to be ambiguous, and but
you
have to make a decision, so that you dont violate your own rules.
So: Romero always intended the film to be ambiguous, but made a personal decision during production for practical purposes.
The rest of Romeros comments regarding
Martin
are as follows:
Romero:
I didnt want to do another strictly horror film and so I initially said Well, lets do a spoof. Initially that was my idea. Lets do a spoof: a vampire who is having problems living in the modern age. Somewhere along the way, an idea came to me that this could be quite tragic.
[]
Romero:
I said What if this is some kid who just is.. He is attracted to women, but doesnt know how to
approach
it. Its this mystery. How do I get there? I mean he keeps saying Id love to do the
Gatiss:
Sexy stuff.
Romero:
'sexy stuff' when someone is awake. I mean, you know, but he feels he has to knock them out in order to do it. I was just trying all across the way to work it out.
[For those in the UK who are interested: Part 3 of
A History of Horror with Mark Gatiss
will be re-broadcast on BBC2 on Tuesday the 2nd of November at 11:20pm.]

Like a previous poster said, it's scarier that way. Is Martin scarier if he's 'human' or a 'monster'?

Agreed. I think they are done to mimick cheasy dracula movies. I think it's clear that he's not really a vampire and it's in his head.
He never looks like he's sick, he has no problem eating normal food, the times when he suddenly felt like he needed to drink blood was when he heard voices. And he mainly targets hot women wich would point to a sexual problem.

I always thought he wasn't really a vampire, but then the flashbacks he had always seemed to counter that theoryso, maybe George is senile?
