Hackman may not have been the best Lex Luthor, he's definitely the best actor to have played him.

No. That hairpiece would have to be an ugly and unnatural bright orange color for it to truly channel the foul essence of Trump's awful coiffure.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

Uhyou know that the hairpiece in this movie was the set-up to him being bald in the escape in Superman II, right? Really, people? The awful hairpiece is a symbol of Lex's vanity.
Right!
The problem is Lex in the comics at the time was bald and didn't wear a hairpiece. And he was a scientist who tried to create devices to battle Superman. Lex in this is just a con artist who wants to blow up California so that he can buy a bunch of land for really cheap and live a life of luxury. I do like this and Superman 2 but it is not that faithful of an adaptation of Lex Luthor.
In this movie Lex is more than a con artist, he is a master criminal who is a scientist as well. Remember the authorities are looking for him but cannot find him.
Do yourself a favor on the dvd go watch the deleted scenes that deal with "the babies".

Actually Gene refused to shave himself bald, so the "hairpieces" is a spin on his own hair
