Most of the infamous murders take place in the first half hour, with only Kelly Nichols in her bathtub to break the monotony afterwards. The horror films that focus on the villains can be classified as "sick," such as "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." If I remember correctly, the earliest example would be 1959's "Horrors of the Black Museum," starring Michael Gough as the villain, who sends his first victim a pair of binoculars with spikes in the viewfinder,a horrible death to be sure.Mario Bava's "Blood and Black Lace"(1964)is another early example, the murders committed in bright exciting colors, and the police investigations done in a dull, perfunctory manner. When the focus is on the villains, there is virtually no one to root for,and audiences have to make their own adjustments.

Maybe its because I saw this movie a long time ago, but I don't remember it as being all that gory or sick, which kind of dissapointed me. Didn't he just kill a few girls in the beginning, then not too much gore until the end?

I thought it wasn't all that spectacular. TChM violence was spectacular even though there wasn't much blood. Here it just doesn't work, because the characters are plain boring. For example the Robocop violence is the greatest, especially the uncut version - it wipes off people that we at least get to know, these are like real people, not just blank characters. This film goes on like a usual giallo with american actors minus the italian feel. You just watch it to know, where is it going to go. That's a good point for a film. You certainly could guess what comes next, but still you watch it because you never know..

I love this film because it's really sick, ugly and in-your-face nasty in its shockingly gross'n'graphic scenes of brutal violence. The sequence where Cameron Mitchell kills the lovely Kelly Nichols with a nail gun is positively breathtaking.
"Warren Oates died for our sins"

I've just seen Tobe Hooper's "Toolbox Muders", and it is not a remake of this one. It only shares the name, but the plot has nothing to do with this one.
