I agree; I thought that Clayton was something of a broad ripoff of the Maj. Winchester character. Taylor was more the believable bureaucratic type, but still funny. Much as I like Rene Auberjonois, I thought they made his character entirely too OTT and goofy as the series went along.

Which is funny as the actor who portrayed Clayton played the original Father Mulcahy in the Robert Altman MASH film

They dumped David Hedison after the pilot because he was too tall and played Taylor as too menacing.
I drink to make other people more interesting.

I always thought that Taylor was written out for Clayton because Taylor was much too stiff. Clayton at least had character even if he was too uptight.

Clayton is awesome!!! The Taylors, especially the pilot one, were too stiff. Rene is the greatest! He's been a regular on three different spin-offs without having his character introduced on the original.
Look behind you! A THREE-headed monkey!!!!!!

I liked Taylor better than Clayton for Benson to spar with. Clayton was just a copy of Major Winchester from MAS*H
"You said it, Curly..ACK!"

No - there was no mention. When the second season began, Clayton was the Chief of Staff, with no mention of Taylor. It's funny - there were two Taylors (David Hedison in the pilot, then Lewis J. Stadlen), and they still dumped the character.
