Which dooms me to be the board contrarian, I guess, as he didn't seem to be too popular with a lot of users here. I thought Lewis Stadlen was very funny in the role, and made a nice contrast to the goofiness of some of the other supporting characters.
Don't get me wrongI liked Rene Auberjonois (I've been a fan of his ever since his beep Red' days way back in the original film of MASH*) initially as Clayton; but I did think later on the writers started making his character of Clayton Endicott just a touch too absurd and obnoxious to be even slightly real. Not really Auberjonois' faultbut Stadlen's Taylor was sort of like Malvolio in Twelfth Nightpompous and full of vain foibles, but identifiable as the real-life sort of twit who takes his authority a little too seriously.
(*Huh? IMDb has started banning character names now? The character Rene played in MASH was the unit priest, whose nickname was based on his Italian/Irish heritage. Jeez, modsenough with the politcally correct sensitivities here, okay?)

Lewis Stadlen was a longtime Broadway performer, and from what I understand the chief reason he elected to leave Benson was because he was unhappy with not being able to do much stage work due to the time demands of doing the show (this is according to Rene Auberjonois, a close friend of Stadlen's, who had worked with him onstage in the past. I think I recall reading somewhere that Stadlen had actually recommended Rene to the producers as his replacement).
I know he's been in a number of Broadway playsif you check him out on the Broadway Database, you'll see he has a pretty impressive roster of post-Benson shows to his credit.
He also has a pretty lengthy list of post-Benson film and tv credits, including several appearances on The Sopranos.

I haven't seen S1 in awhile but from memory Taylor wasn't that funny but he was ok. Clayton/Rene just brought much more to the show and was funnier. Did the actor who played Taylor do much after Benson? And did he leave or was Benson "retooled"?
