Robert Stack was the best character in the movie, IMHO.
His piss-takes are priceless. While the whole country is hysterical, Stilwell is just doing his stuff and waving off the loonies. He had some great lines like;
Sergeant, I want a one block perimeter here.
YES, SIR!! WHAT'S THE PLAN, SIR?
Hold the block.
This is what a lot of wannabe militarists don't get and why many don't like it.
It's one of the few movies I watch regularly that actually gets funnier each time. The only bit I didn't like was the dummy.

I remember when this came out, although I never saw it in the theatre.
Still, I never did mind the movie.
I usually watch it, just to oogle over the prettiest girl Hollywood ("
Hollywooood!
") ever knew, Dianne Kay.
Also, some great early performances by some really great actors; Treat Williams, Bobby DiCicco & Frank McCrae, not withstanding.
Robert Stack had some of the best lines from this movie, though.

I think 'rape' is a little too strong. He's a big D-Bag. He's tyring to grab her (which IS assault), but not rape.

It was so disturbing that comic book!
It was probably more in line with how the movie was originally conceived.
Originality needs a reboot.

I loved the film as a kid. As I get older I still enjoy it but I do have a few problems with it now, particularly the idea that Treat Williams - who was my favourite character as a kid! - spends the whole movie trying to rape Dianne Kay. I know it could be seen as a live action version of Popeye, Olive Oyl and Bluto but as kid did anyone really think about what Bluto would do to Olive after he'd finally made away with her? I know I certainly didn't - a bit like the Biff rape subplot in Back to the Future which was written by the same writers of this movie, you don't think about how unpleasant it is at the time. I will never forget when I first encountered the 1941 graphic novel in about 1990 or so which was so grotesque in its depiction of the film and characters that it opened my eyes to some of the things going on, again particularly the Sitarski character who is portrayed in the comic as a soldier who degenerates into a hideous raping beast. It was so disturbing that comic book!
