i think in one of the Matrix movies one of the ships has the name " nostromo" as well. if you dont know, the name is from the novel of the same title by joseph conrad, born in polandm died in Britain. the novel deals with capitalisn, business, alienation, etc,
the writers and director of Alien were not ignorant of the origin of the name for the ship: it was chosen deliberately. is Alien an allegory about the consequences of far-flung capitalism? i dont know. but i like that name-

The Nostromo itself was a hauling vehicle Benny
It was towing a refinery across space and didn't actually take the refinery onto planets itself
I'd imagine the ore was loaded onto the refinery at the location where the Nostromo picked it all up.
When the Nostromo visited LV-426 it detached itself from the refinery and went down onto the surface separate from the refinery. When it came back up from the surface it reattached itself to the refinery.
Had it completed its journey to Earth I'd imagine it would have undocked itself once more and gone about its business the way a tug boat does after it is finished towing larger floating structures
