I found it hard to believe he died from the injuries in that fight and the way the scene played out. To make it even more unconvincing you can see him breathing lying there on the table and I believe the pulse in his neck move if I remember correctly. Everyone is acting like he died and it looked more like he passed out.
Anyone else notice this or felt that way about that scene or were your eyes too full of tears already to notice this?

Couldn't agree more. Hate it when people actually 'look' for flaws. Just enjoy the bloody film! It is still a 'film', not real. Mistakes can be made. Plus I think he could have died from injuries considering he hadn't boxed for 7 years and had been badly beaten in previous fights (see conversation with jack warden in diner).

Exactly, eyes are too teary and hearts too broken to pay attention at such small details, the same kind of details anyone would notice even in the greatest masterpieces, like finding an extra waving to the camera or something like that. Besides, "The Champ" is obviously a simple film telling a simple story, the directing is not oscar worthy but that's because the film relies most on the relationship between the characters and the acting performances, and on this level, Voight and Schroeder deserved more accolades.
