Watching it now. I am not sure the citicisms are entirely justified. I would class it as a pretty average movie though not a poor one.
I still think it is better than Armageddon which is in my top 5 worst movies.
Too see a really good movie of this type though I have to say Deep Impact is the one to go for.

Absolutely despise Armageddon. The rapid-fire overediting was sheer murder on the eyes. Plus the crappy script wasted a lot of good actors like Steve Buscemi, Will Patton, Billy Bob Thornton, and Keith David.

i agree, this film is good, it doesn't deserve such low rankings
i remeber watching it over satellite tv in early 90ties, it was shown here and there, it was fun to watch.
the criticism is underserving:
plastic rockets - i say it's better than CGI.
allegedly bad Acting - it's acting as any other movie. i find oscar winning movies much worse or "european" drama (queen) cinema.
not real - it should not be real, this is sci fi, this is pop corn movie, not some discovery channel production or NASA tv.
boring - it is not boring, it has many scenes around the earth. siberia scenes are breaktakingly beautiful. other meteor films stolen the first scenes from this one - scientist getting information something is about to happen-scene.
people are too much spoiled, and ocd makes them unable to enjoy films care-free

This. I am watching it on TV now and really enjoy it. I think that it did a great job of dealing with the state of affairs between the U.S. and the Soviet Union at the time while effectively blending the threat of a meteor strike.

Sure, it's not a blatant rip-off but it comes pretty close. Movies like 'Battle Beyond the Stars' are also based strongly on other movies (Star Wars and The Magnificent Seven/The Seven Samurai in that particular case) even though the actual location changes.
There are a LOT of similarities to 'Lucifer's Hammer' in this movie, and to me it's fairly clear. It's been a while since I've seen this movie and/or read 'Lucifer's Hammer' to comment more deeply, but that was my feeling when both were more recent in my mind.

How do you figure that? Mpst of the action in Deep Impact takes place on the east coast, whereas Lucifer's Hammer takes place in California. Also, there is no mission to the Hammer just a space mission to study it, unlike the mission in Deep Impact.

If you liked 'Deep Impact' I'd suggest you read 'Lucifer's Hammer' by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. It's basically the book the movie was written from (IMHO anyway).
Yes. And you actually cared about the characters in Deep Impact. There was no happy ending too. No saving the world.

I totally agree. Deep Impact far surpassed Armageddon! The makers of Armageddon basically just tried to dazzle us with a who's who of a cast and some of the cheesiest Aerosmut music to date. LOL. The movie itself was cliched and weak. Deep Impact had a better story and made more sense from a scientific standpoint.
