Seems there's a a lot of posts here from fanboys of "better" sci-fi films of the era. Well if you like aliens and monsters and walking carpets (Chewbacca) that's fine, but the rest of us will sit back and enjoy this more adult drama and not whine about how the special effects were poor. This movie is about a giant asteroid possibly hitting earth which could happen and has happened in the past. Regarding its Cold War era, it is a dated time capsule of sorts, yes, but nuclear missiles are still with us and one nuclear bomb can still ruin our day to say the least.
