I just watched Lair of the White Worm, another Ken Russell movie, and Amanda Donohoe ALSO sported some hairy pits. She's absolutely stunning, so it made an impact that was only strengthened by this movie.
Is this a Ken Russell thing? I know he uses a lot of symbolism

Just watched the movie last night for the first time and I noticed it too, in two different scenes. I didn't know if maybe the hair from her head got under her arm, or if it was shadow. Either way, I find Blair Brown quite unattractive.

Coming from a woman I refuse to go around with hairy pits. I don't do it for males, I do it for myself. Hairy armpits on a woman is just nasty.

What a sad shallow world we live in if the only thing the OP thinks worth mentioning about this wonderful film is the fact that an actress had armpit hair in a couple of scenes. It obviously didn't bother the director and why should it? Imagine your favourite actress, say it's Angelina Jolie for arguement's sake, if she was lying on your bed begging you to boff her brains out would you turn her down if she hadn't shaved her armpits that week?

This presumably comes as a shock to you, but female underarm fur is really no less hygienic than a male's: as long as it's kept free of pathogens it's not intrinsically unsanitary at all. If anything, it's the fashion for female shaving that has the greatest hygiene risks - apart from nicks and cuts, trapped hairs and

can be potentially disfiguring.
The bottom line is:

. That's fine, but trying to push that dislike as though it were some universal truth rather than a personal preference just makes you look like a buttock. You could look at it this way: It fit her character. Science folk are notoriously bad groomers. They've got too much on their minds, they either forget to wash their hair/shave their armpits, or they just don't care.

I'm a guy, and if I had hairy armpits I probably WOULD shave them. Fortunately I naturally happen to have very little armpit hair. I think body hair in general is gross. On both sexes.

Come on and let's cut to the chase: armpit hair is an attempt by American men to rob women of their humanitiy. Like one respondent saidarm pit hair is part of being a mammal. . . and only in the US does this issue every really come up. The reason is simple: American men want to women to be ONLY the virgin (to assure their salvation) or the whore (to meet their sexual needs). American men have no more room for fully realized women who are their equals. . .so let's don't do the dance about "grooming." Grooming has nothing to do with armpit hairit is outright sexism. If grooming where the issue, then why aren't men expected to shave their pits?

with that face and body, if her hair was what you noticed you must have seen the film to many times. i never noticed it at all and i have seen this film for years and look forward for the sandstorm scene. if she had under arm hair i have never noticed.

its called grooming. everyone has plaque on their teeth, but we're expected to remove it. everyone has body odor but we're expected to mask it until we can shower. a thousand years ago many culture didn't even bathe, they used perfumes and whatnot instead. let's not rely on the barbarian aspects of a millenium ago, shall we?
if it were an isolated incident, i wouldn't have been so annoyed. however, both scenes in which you could see her armpits, there was hair. so it wasn't like she simply forgot one morning.
