I just finally saw it, and being the sci-fi junkie that I am, I quite enjoyed it. I knew exactly what to expect going in, the characters were fun, the sci-fi effects were pretty good (all things considered) and the acting was B movie perfect.

Is it hated? I think its a cult classic by those who have seen it. Its a B movie with slightly bigger budget and caught a lot of fans during the Star Wars craze. Its certainly a lot better than some of the other movies of the era and better than Corman's own films that ripped it off a'la Space Raiders. The only thing I think that lets it down is the unnecessary rape subplot which wasn't really needed and quite disturbing for a PG family movie.
