I didn't like this film when I first saw it. It had been hyped up and I wasn't disturbed and I wasn't excited, I was bored.
I was only around 15 and was underage due to the R18 age restriction in NZ. It screened at a small private cinema that just wanted the money. I saw
Cruising
as well around the same time. They may have been a double bill.
I loved
Cruising
. Both films had censor excisions made to tone down violent scenes, though I wasn't aware of this at the time. Seeing a gay themed film and representation of homos on the screen was refreshing and exciting for me.
Now, I really don't care much for
Cruising
. I think it is an ugly repellent film and love
Dressed To Kill
and its technique, as dated and even naive as it is. Michael Caine has claimed he felt awkward dressing in drag and held back.

My dad rented this and Sophie’s Choice on VHS for date night in the mid-80s, I guess he thought they were romance movies.

I love Dressed To Kill. Great erotic crime thriller with some truly memorable scenes (e.g., the museum) and dazzling cinematography. If Hitchcock had lived to make a giallo film it would probably have looked a lot like Dressed To Kill. Most disturbing scene: when Angie Dickinson reads the doctor's note before leaving the guy's apartment. Yikes!

Body Double - '84
is just as entertaining and holds oodles of charm within its cheesy thriller mode.
I have no problem with Allen, except her performance in
Blow Out
. It was a huge misstep. She was fine as the hooker in DTK.

She embarrassed herself big-time and almost ruins
Blow Out - '81
. De Palma only cast her because of nepotism. Her characterization should never have been allowed, but De Palma would have let her do whatever she wanted.
