<p dir="auto">I think that odd. Ok, in the begining he was frithened and didn't wanna talk. But how could he be that polite and talk in an educated manner? And how could he know how to read?<br />
I doubt, even more in the situation depicted in the movie, that he'd be educated that way.</p>

<p dir="auto">I believe his mother taught him to read probably from the bible. The gentile accent was a bit odd but so was Oliver Twist's posh accent in David Lean's Oliver Twist and Sir Carroll Reed's Oliver.</p>
