In my opinion a 1:1 remake is not necessary - and doubtful it would be as good/successful.
But somehow I would be interested in one or more sequals.
E.g.
Either how Cdr. Owns/ Mr Tideman lived afterwards, experienced the war /became involved (or initiated) in the construction of the Nimitz, trying to understand what happened
Or a bit more Sci-Fi like with scientists trying to understand what happened/or it is happening again to another ship (perhaps transported to the future where they notice that China successfully launched a surprise attack against the USA).
And John Scott doing the score again

A sequel depicting the next generation of carrier guys could work. The novelization describing the future as "alien" gives a good hint as to what it could be about.

In the book, they discussed what happened after Lasky went with Tideman, and the talk was of more time travel, this time forward instead of backwards. If they did a sequel, it could focus on the descendants of the crew and of course Lasky.

Too much time has elapsed for a sequel, the movie was filmed in 1980 and most people have never heard of it. A remake is a better idea.
One cool thing about a remake is our modern military technology is EVEN MORE advanced now than it was in 1980 when this was filmed so the disparity in military technology between World War 2 and the time traveling Aircraft carrier would be even greater.
It would be cool to have a dogfight between modern aircraft sent back in time from 2016 (or later depending on when it finally gets filmed). To make it exciting since modern aircraft would have the advantage maybe there could be a tradeoff like being badly outnumbered or maybe a time crunch where for some plot reason they have to win the dogfight in a certain length of time to prevent some other disaster.
