Seems like this movie played a bigger role in influencing He-Man than Conan:

General Kala looks a lot like Evil-Lyn

Klytus looks like Skeletor

Flash Gordon himself looks like He-Man when he's riding the Rocket Cycle

Ming's palace looks like the Palace of Eternia
And the movie came out before He-Man did, so the timing is just right to influence He-Man.

I had not seen Flash Gordon as a kid so I always assumed He-Man was a cross between Conan and Star Wars. Now I've seen Flash Gordon and yes "Conan meets Flash Gordon" is more accurate (although Star Wars was heavily influenced by Flash Gordon).

Yes good call to the OP. I always saw He-Man and the MOTU to be an amalgam of Star Wars / Flash Gordon and The Beastmaster; remember that there is the big cat and the bird of prey in The Beastmaster, as well as the general medieval-type setting.

An internal memo from Mattel dated June 12, 1980 mentions the inspirations for what would become the Masters of the Universe toy line: "The theme would be oriented toward Frizetta (sic) type figures possibly combined with parts of Conan, Flash Gordon, and Star Wars."
"Frizetta" refers to artist Frank Frazetta.
