I am pushing 50 and although I have owned and loved the soundtrack to this since it came out, I never actually saw the movie until now. As I get older, I don't analyze movies like I used to. I simply rate them on whether or not I was entertained. I had a great time with this flick. Yes, I groaned a couple of times. I shook my head and rolled my eyes. Nonetheless, I enjoyed every minute of it. There was bad dialogue, some very bad effects and some bad or over acting but man the sets, the colors (the sky was amazing!), the costumes, the old school story with the characters in and out of various predicaments great fun. I will certainly keep this in my collection and watch it again and again. It has a certain character to it that is severely lacking these days.

Flash Gordon
(1980) was no match for the
Star Wars
trilogy in terms of story and special effects, but it's a fun, colourful, and sexy film that doesn't take itself too seriously. The male lead may be bland, but the supporting actors are well cast in their roles and seem to be having a good time. The soundtrack by Queen, like the rest of the movie, is both cheesy and awesome. I usually don't care for campy films, but this one works, perhaps because it doesn't make a total mockery of the characters. Flash is still a hero who saves the day and Ming is still a threat who needs to be stopped.
