King Features Syndicate originally wanted to do a John Carter comic strip with Alex Raymond as the artist, but the negotiations with Burroughs for the rights fell through. There was a lot of similarity between the original Flash Gordon comic strips (the Alex Raymond ones) and the Jon Carter stories. Both films were relatively faithful to the source material, which probably explains the continued similarity.
Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!
