It just left me with too many questions. I suppose I would have preferred another ten minutes or so to wrap things up a bit.
Was he trying to transfer himself over to the Iron's character or was that the only way he could survive the battle by giving up his own body and becoming him. What now? Is that some plan by him to take over his identity? If he was powerful enough to defeat him in their scanner war why not keep his own form rather than going into him?
I guess where the film ended didn't feel like the end, it felt like the film should have proceeded a little further, things didn't feel quite resolved yet and that last scene created more questions that it answered.

The film was rushed. Cronenberg didn't have the time or finances to make the film he essentially wanted. If you ask me, this film is a testament of how good a Director he really is. It had every reason to fail, yet it's a Criterion Collection classic. Does that mean it is flawless? Of course not But I wouldn't change a thing.

Those sudden endings after a big reveal seem to be a thing of the past. I bet if this movie was renamed or made today there would be like 10 extra minutes for the whole wrap-up.

It's Michael Ironside, not Jeremy Irons.

Ironside was trying to "suck" Vale's mind into himself forcefully. Vale let Ironside think he was winning by sacrificing his body and then he put all his strength into projecting his mind into Ironside's body.

Ironside was putting so much strength into "pulling" Vale he was totally caught off-guard when Vale willingly shot himself into Ironside's body. Vale took advantage of Ironside's surprise and erased Ironside's mind from the inside out, claiming his body for himself.

For me that doesn't really answer a question it creates one. For his body to be destroyed but Jeremy Iron's body is ok that means that Irons is more powerful.and that he won the battle but the good guy kept his mind and identity and Iron's (whatever his character's name was) lost his so that means he lost the battle..then why did the good guy lose his body if he won the battle. It doesn't make sense to me.
Once again I don't know if it were a conscience plan or out of necessity and if it were a plan what was the plan.

The guy had to take his brothers body because his body was destroyed in the battle.

There are 2 sequels. I just this film for the first time 2 days ago and I really didn't care to much for it. If I had seen it when it was new I'm sure it would have been better but it is quite outdated.
Sorry for being off topic there but yes the ending did seem rushed.
