I might be alone here but for me Lack was actually decent in the role, as his character is clearly described as a social misfit, an almost 'non-human'. He was never supposed to be charismatic and Lack what was right for the role, certainly under directives from Cronenberg whose films tend to present great, landmark performances for a lot of actors. For all his supposedly lack of charisma and credibilty, Lack was for me quite convincing when he was using his Scanner abilities. You could see the pain and the confusion and the estrangeness on his face, as well as some excitement regarding the control of his powers.
Bill Foster: I'm the bad guy?How did that happen?

Apparently Cronenberg cast him because of his unusual eyes. (They both seem to point in different directions)
Shame because the guy really cannot act at all and almost ruins the film.
Was it a millionaire who said "Imagine no possessions"?
