What people still like it, Kubrick fanboys that would likely dismiss one of his best films, Barry Lyndon - ‘75?

Naw, 50years later, people still like The Shinning. Has nothing to do with selling it. And Fk Stephen King, Kubrick is a much better director than he is an author.

He was right-on in this movie.
Perhaps his casting of Nicholson could be considered a casting coup, but when one looks at and breaks down the finished product, Kubrick wasn't right on the money. He had divided audiences, especially those familiar with the popular novel. Great art challenges. Look at 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Kubrick didn't so much challenge, as prompt many audiences to question what all the fuss was about. He didn't deliver what was promised.
Kubrick's film was surrounded by hype. A hype that he helped create to sell it. He did the same with
Eyes Wide Shut
20yrs later. That is just as flawed.

Kubrick's film has been influential and has a cult following, but it isn't greater than the sum of its parts.
King wanted Jon Voight. He didn't like Kubrick's take on what he thought Wendy would be like and the kind of person Jack would be married too. He claimed Wendy was a woman who had had it relatively easy and hadn't experienced much in her life until her universe was turned upside down by the Overlook. Duvall he felt, was vulnerable right from the start.
Nicholson apparently wanted Jessica Lange.

He was a marquee drawcard. His portrayal of madness made it work for the most part, but it just wasn’t subtle enough and he needed to be reigned in.
This character needed nuanced peeks into his madness during the calmer moments, (if there were any), and it needed more subtlety. It was a personality performance. Duvall was controlled more than Nicholson going by the end result and from evidence documented, how she was emotionally bullied by Kubrick.
