I realized we didn't have a thread about the show's dimwitted but lovable Officer Simpson. I don't think the writers originally intended for him to become such an important recurring character, but yet he really developed into a significant cast member. I thought he added the perfect amount of wry humor to the show.

Yes, they must have seen some quality in him then kept asking him back. He's great on this show and I'm glad they expanded his role in the fifth season after the Chief dies.

He actually made his first appearance in the pilot. He is the one who brings Katie home after she was caught shoplifting. Maybe they saw something in the actor Howard Morton and decided to keep him on.

Sometimes a character does an appearance that is unforgettable and they bring the character back as either recurring or a regular role.
He was perfect opposite the Chief, in the same way Addy's personality was so different from Nell's.
