This is the type of movie that made me fall in love with the romanticism of medieval Europe with all its knights and battles. The whole movie has this fantastical nature to it. I put it up there with Legend in terms of how beautiful its all shot. The armor is shiny. The landscape's a lush green. The magic just permeates the story.
So many stories, so little time.

It also has Clive Swift.
Not as well known but I had fun recognizing Arthur's foster father who played Richard, the husband to the insufferable Hyacinth in Keeping Up Appearances, one of my favorite sitcoms.
Ironically, the lead didn't have even close to the kind of career these minor players had in his own movie.
Yeah, I was thinking of that too.
Or I will think the opposite when I watch an unknown, playing against the lead, who has a lot of lines and is really good then is never seen or heard from again.

Agreed.
I'm surprised that more versions of the legends of King Arthur have not been made or they have not done a remake of this one yet.
No need to when this is all ya need.
Patrick Stewart is among those lesser known actors at the time who went on to bigger things.

Even though when I first watched it, and had no idea what was going on, I loved it, the music, the visuals, the characters, it was so unusual. One of the first dvd's I bought. There are several scenes in this film I would call cinematic perfection.
Kinda late but I just found out there is a documentary about the making of it. Looking forward to watching that.

True. This film is a gem!! From the score to Carmina Burana blasting this movie was everything I could have hoped for. Being a fan of The Legend of King Arthur, I literally drank in everything surrounding it. It wasn't until I was in college that I saw how many great actors were actually in this movie! I own this and could watch it over and over and never tire of it.

There is a little chewing of the scenery. Liam Neeson dining at the round table for one. I recall NIcol Williamson being accused of being a bit over the top as Merlin too. Nigel Terry is also a bit heavy handed.
But mostly I dismiss this as being part of the subject matter and also a balance to the production. The production is also over the top. It doesn't support subtle acting. These characters are larger than life and the story is one that has lasted for centuries. How can you tone it down with that Wagnerian sound track playing in the back ground?

It's interesting, I've read this a lot. I think why I don't see it, is because I fell in love with this film as a kid. I absolutely loved knights, dragons, wizards, the whole bit. This was the closest to that being real I had ever seen. I imagine seeing this as an adult for the first time I would probably be a lot more critical.
I'm just glad I saw it as a kid, now I can enjoy it forever.

Not much can compete with this excellent fantasy film. Lord of the Rings is the only of the more recent fantasy films that can evoke a similar feeling. It's truly a gem of fantasy, I wish more filmmakers would be inspired by it but I rarely hear it mentioned.
