I believe he was a composite/fictional person, put there so Joan could have an adult to talk to while the children were too small for conversation. He's meant to represent a long string of husbands and lovers.

I'm thinking he's meant to be a combo of her 3rd husband Phillip
Terry and Greg Bautzer whom she had an affair with, but I've never read the book so would be interested to know who was mentioned in it and why they changed it?
