Who is responsible for the extreme over-the-top, histrionic performance? Did the director push for Faye to be so exaggerated or was that Faye's own interpretation and choice?

I say director if she was being too campy he could have stopped filming and yelled at her to knock it off. And the movie isn't even directly from the book it was Hollywood-ized.
and considering the fact that faye loved joan's acting, she must have been embarrassed that she was made to portray her as this overly dramatic drunk. it is a hard pill to swallow when your 'idol' was really a psycho who abused and mind fcked her kids.
Oh God. Fortune
vomits
on my eiderdown once more.
