I love the idea of a modern television series' universe set in a very "Alien"-esque future. The sets, costumes, tech, overall look could all be "70s' trucker in space". Not this super-polished, lens-flare future we keep getting shown nowadays.
I think it has potential to be a very character-driven series. Montone, in particular, could become a wild card hard to pin down morally. He could be someone with just enough survival skill to avoid giving away his true loyalties.
The "inside man", on the other hand, is unambiguously corrupt. With his treachery secret, he undermines the hero from within. The villains' eyes and ears.
Plenty of opportunity would exist for grim social commentary as well, considering the bleak future presented. And of course, shotgun duels. It's just not "Outland" without shotgunsin space.

If you're still interested/ checking this thread also try a series staring Michael Pare (from Moon 44) that ran from 2000-2003 called Starhunter. Doesn't seem like a police series, I think it was more Firefly-esque, but it was definitely set in the grimy, industrial, ass-end of space that you're wishing to see more stories in.

Not a bad idea. Could be a low-tech Star Trek without the starships.

There was a British TV series in the late 80s about cops on a moon base or space station. Very similar concept. Can't remember the name of it.

That would be pretty cool. I think you'd have to scale the mine up a lot though - there's only like 2,100 people there in the film, so it's like a really small town or a large village. Not much scope for a constant stream of law-breaking.
Either you make the mine about ten times the size, at least, or maybe better, you put a whole bunch of different facilities all over Io and make the Marshall force responsible for all of them.

Yeah I tend to agree with you hollankreil. Firefly was nothing like this movie.
I too would like to see a TV series that had the same feel as Outland.

Isolated in a bleak, deep space location

Populated by working class types and research types.

Dealing with some unusual phenomenon
We are lucky that "Moon" was made.
It was created as something of an homage to the feel of some of those classic 70s/80s space isolationist films:

2001

Silent Running

Alien (and Aliens)

Saturn 3

Outland
And also "Moon 44"

Except "Firefly" wasn't about law enforcement in a single location, it was about ex-rebel outlaws carrying out one job after another in various "space western" locales.

No, it shouldn't be. This story is self-contained, and besides, there already was a series like you suggest, it was called "Firefly"
