Is it a near-miss?
Is it truly bad?
How does it compare with Blade Runner, Altered States, or Escape From New York?

Love this film. Saw it in the theater back in the day. Maybe the drive in. Great movie, absolutely enjoyed it and watch it every now and then. Great Chemistry between the actors and back in the day with the heads exploding was a very cool effect.

It's a classic, completely underrated. It's a true sci-fi gem that aged really well when you realize almost no other movie has mined (heh) the same territory. Even the completely outdated 80's tech gadgetry seems realistic on the craphole mining colony everyone works on. Alien has the same gritty feeling (which I do believe Outland stole from). I put it above Altered States and Escape from New York by a wide margin and I like both of those movies too. It can't touch Bladerunner, but almost nothing can.

It's a western set in space..right down to the new sheriff battling the evil mine owner. Sure ain't Blade Runner, but then not Escape From New York either.
